Oriental House
About This Spot
Tucked into a quiet stretch of North Broadway in South Amboy, Oriental House offers a kind of unpretentious comfort that invites you to pause and savor a good meal at your own pace. The moment you step inside, the modest yet welcoming ambiance hints at the familiar—a friendly neighborhood spot where the hum of quiet conversations and the gentle clatter of dishes set an easygoing rhythm. It’s the kind of place that doesn’t rush you, encouraging a slow savor of simple pleasures.
The atmosphere here feels genuinely local, a crossroads where regulars and newcomers alike find a moment of warmth. Whether you're grabbing takeout after a long day or settling in for a relaxed dinner, there’s an approachable calm to the space that keeps things grounded. Street parking may be the only option, but it’s part of the small-town rhythm that makes this spot feel like a real part of the community.
On the menu, familiar favorites come with thoughtful touches that reveal themselves bite by bite. From the tender, carefully cooked pepper steak to the quietly satisfying chicken lo mein, each dish carries an honest heartiness. Fried wontons, in particular, have won local affection—crispy little parcels that perfectly balance lightness with flavor. The kitchen’s attention to detail shines through in the way common ingredients are brought to life, whether in a mild broth or a vibrant stir-fry.
While the focus here is traditional Chinese fare, there’s a warmth that goes beyond the food. Customer service moves with genuine attentiveness, making every order feel personally handled. It’s evident in how the staff manages a steady flow of takeout requests and dine-in guests, all while maintaining a steady, calm pace that echoes the restaurant’s overall atmosphere.
For those who appreciate a place where the everyday rhythms of life meet honest cooking and friendly faces, Oriental House offers a quietly joyful experience. It’s not a spot that dazzles with flash or fuss—instead, it quietly earns its place as a trusted, dependable local anchor where meals are a moment to enjoy amidst the steady pulse of the neighborhood.

The only negative I have (and it’s a big one and has happened 4-5 times now), I order no onion in my pepper steak and they add a $2 extra meat fee. I didn’t ask for extra meat to compensate for lack of veggies , and I don’t like it added without it being acknowledged or even approved/denied.. really not okay with that decision being made without my knowledge of it and will say something next time.. However when it comes to the food? Do it. Our usual orders are a some kind of mix of chicken&broccoli, pepper steak, boneless ribs, sesame chicken, fried wontons… everything has been great every time. One of the “better “ meats when it comes to both the chicken and the beef.. delivery is uncomfortably fast at times lol. Prices are average to anywhere else around here but the portions are great. Would definitely reccomend.

This food establishment welcomed in with warm greetngs and smiles even when busy. The host and hostess are genuinely kind as well as staff. As south amboy grew for the better, so has this food establishment as well (only got better) [ i live in south amboy for 33 years] ... A ferry ride; train; bus; vehicle commute to new york, somewhere in south amboy with tranquility like dining in in this food establishment to enjoy a wholesome meal. ... If i may...recommend the chicken pad thai ... Please enjoy the rest of your day to those seeing this review and everyone else out there
